Does anyone find this stupid-we as a country supply the "Red Lobster chain of restaurants"with lobster all year long but we cannot sell lobster to our visitors unless you buy a permit from the ministry of fisheries-they use the excuse it is to replenish supplies-well we should stop everyone from buying them during the "closed" months

the "BHA permit to buy in the offseason" is a joke... If a restaurant is legit and buys via the program, ultimately it's a disservice to tourists as the restaurants are charged upwards of $40 BZE a lb and either have to pass that along to their customers (ridiculous) or eat the loss.  If the restaurants are not, the whole program only encourages poaching (obviously there is little to no policing.)

The whole "off season" is a joke anyways, as there is little to no enforcement to prevent fishing for lobster in the offseason... Anyone who buys lobster on opening day can attest to that.  If Belize really wanted to get serious with respect to protecting the fisheries here, they would enforce the off season in the same manner that say California enforces abalone fishing... If you are caught poaching abalone in CA (among other things) they seize your boat on the spot.

Thankfully though, Red Lobster is absolutely delicious and does the Belize exported lobster proud.

Really?  I'm surprised to hear you say that.  Although I do admit having tasted their hush puppies in another life and I would, in that respect, concur.

The end result of all of this of course is that lobster in Belize have been greatly overfished and are in danger of becoming extinct.

'was kidding about Red Lobster.

It's ridiculous that Belize exports at the expense of its own tourism industry... go figure.

I had a bad mean at Red Lobster once and I wrote them a letter and nicely told them so. Someone from head office was very nice and they gave me $100 worth of certificates to give them a second chance. IT was good the next time around and I have been back a few times since.

Good customer service goes a long way.

I agree closed should be closed especially when it means the Caribbean Sea life needs to maintain a healthy balance.

So just got an e-mail from the BHA... this year they are charging restaurants the bargin price of $35.00 BZE/lb to participate in "Lobster Project."  Someone (with any restaurant/hospitality industry experience preferably) please explain to me how a business can purchase this, prep, prepare and serve it and still have the end result be something REMOTELY beneficial to tourism???

That said, as per usual lobster will be off the menu here at Rojo starting the 15th....

I feel guilty eating lobster when it is IN season and maybe only have it once or twice a year.  Each year the tails look more like large shrimp.
